How to choose

  • For pixel art, pick a pixel-art tool. General image models often don't land on a clean pixel grid.
  • Check style consistency: can you give it a reference image or train it on your own art?
  • Look for the formats you need, like sprite sheets, single frames, or tilesets.
  • Check commercial use on the plan you'll use. Some free plans are personal-use only or add a watermark.
  • If you sell on Steam, AI art that ships with your game must be disclosed in Steam's content survey.

Guides

Questions people ask

What's the best AI for pixel art sprites?

PixelLab and Retro Diffusion are made for pixel art, and both work with Aseprite. Our pixel art guide compares them with general art tools.

Can AI make sprite sheets and animations?

Yes. PixelLab and Ludo.ai both generate sprite animations. Ludo says its sprite sheets import into Unity, Godot, GameMaker and Unreal.

Can I use AI sprites in a game I sell?

Often yes on paid plans. Scenario's free plan is personal and evaluation use only, and Ludo's free sprite sheets carry a watermark. Check each tool's commercial note.

Can I upscale textures for a mod with AI?

Yes. Free tools like Upscayl and chaiNNer upscale textures locally. Nexus asks you to tag AI-upscaled textures as AI Assisted; see [AI tools for game modding](/guides/ai-tools-for-game-modding/).
