AI coding tools for game engines
AI coding assistants write, explain and fix game code inside a real engine or code editor. Some are built into one engine, like Roblox Studio's Assistant or Unity's AI tools; others are general coding tools you can point at any video game project. They help most if you can read the code they write.

How to choose
- Start with your engine. Engine-built assistants know that engine; general coding tools work across engines but need more context from you.
- Check the free plan. Some coding tools have none, and others limit how much you can use them each month.
- Tell the AI your exact engine version. Engine features change between versions.
- Look at how much it can do in your project: answer questions, edit files, or run actions in the editor.
Guides
Questions people ask
Which AI works with Godot, Unity, Unreal or Roblox?
Roblox Studio has its own Assistant, Unity has its own AI tools, and Bezi works inside Unity. General tools like Cursor, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot work on code from any engine.
Do I need to know how to code?
It helps a lot. These tools write code, but you'll need to read it, test it and tell the AI what's wrong.
Who owns the code an AI assistant writes?
Cursor's terms assign suggestions to you, and GitHub says it doesn't claim ownership of Copilot suggestions. Check each tool's terms.
Is there a free AI coding assistant for games?
Some have free plans, like Copilot Free and Cursor's free plan. Claude Code is not on Claude's free plan.
Can these tools write mod code?
Yes, they work on Java, C# and Lua mod code like any other code. Check AI-written Papyrus carefully. See [AI tools for game modding](/guides/ai-tools-for-game-modding/) for the disclosure rules on Nexus and Modrinth.
